How to Analyze Financial Statements

Financial statements are the 'secret weapon' of serious investors. Unfortunately, most people get dizzy just seeing numbers and tables. In reality, you only need to know how to read 3 main sections, and you'll already be way ahead of 90% of retail investors.

Definition

Financial statements are official documents showing a company's financial condition. There are three main components: (1) Income Statement -- shows revenue and expenses, (2) Balance Sheet -- shows assets, debts, and equity, (3) Cash Flow Statement -- shows money actually coming in and going out.

Simple Explanation (Analogy)

Financial statements are like a company's medical check-up. The income statement is like a blood test -- shows if the company is healthy or 'anemic' (losing money). Balance sheet is like a bone scan -- shows the company's structure (assets vs debts). Cash flow statement is like a heart test -- shows if 'blood' (cash) is flowing properly. Good investors always check all three.

Public company financial statements in Indonesia can be accessed for free on the IDX website (idx.co.id) or on the company's own website (Investor Relations section). Companies must publish quarterly reports (Q1, Q2, Q3) and audited annual reports. You can download financial statements of BBCA, TLKM, or your favorite stock and start reading.

How to Use

Start with the Income Statement: is revenue growing? Is profit increasing? Compare with the previous year and the same quarter last year (YoY).
Look at the Balance Sheet: how big is debt vs equity (DER)? Are assets growing? Is there large goodwill or intangible assets (potential risk)?
Check the Cash Flow Statement: is Operating Cash Flow positive? A company with positive earnings but negative operating cash flow = major red flag. Cash is king!

Common Mistakes

Only looking at net profit without checking earnings quality. Profits can be 'manipulated' through accounting (legal but misleading). Always cross-check with operating cash flow.
Not comparing consistently. One quarter of financial statements isn't enough. Compare at least the last 3-5 years to spot trends and consistency.
Focusing too much on absolute numbers without calculating key ratios. Revenue of Rp10 trillion vs Rp5 trillion doesn't mean the Rp10 trillion is better -- look at margins, ROE, growth, etc.
